Nehirim: LGBT Jews, family, allies

Our Mission
Nehirim is a national community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Jews, families, and allies, committed to a more just and inclusive world. Our retreats, student programs, and community events transform lives. And our advocacy work promotes equality and diversity based on the teachings of the Jewish tradition.
What Does "Nehirim" Mean?
"Nehirim" means lights. More specifically, 'Nehirin' is an Aramaic word found in the Talmud and the Zohar which refers to the radiant colors of the rainbow and the sky, like the brilliant lights of the sunset. The word thus represents not only the spectrum of queer sexual identities, as does the popular rainbow symbol, but the spiritual essences of those constituent parts as well. Moreover, as the term "nehirim" is not well known, yet is found in Jewish tradition, it is itself a symbol for how queer Jews can claim lesser-known aspects of the Jewish tradition as they articulate their own identities today.
They have some good resources on their site plus events, retreats, camps, and more.

SIGNAL BOOST: Help Make TGIF 2013 Happen!
SIGNAL BOOST: Help Make TGIF 2013 Happen!:The theme for T.G.I.F. 2013 is, Transcending Pride, Evolving Movements. In the wake of Paige Clay, the blatant genocide of black transfeminine youth, and the intentional exclusion of the TGI agenda in the fight for "Marriage Equality", T.G.I.F. 2013 poses this question. Now that we are proud of who we are, how can we make it so that forthcoming TGI generations don't have to face what we do?

Introducing ‘SheZow,’ The ‘Transgender’ Superhero Cartoon That Will Destroy America And/Or Entertain Some Children
The United States of America was expected to meet its sad end this past weekend when The Hub network debuted its new animated children’s series SheZow. The Australian/Canadian cartoon, which already debuted in other, less delicate countries without causing social disorder, is about a boy with a superhero secret identity. The shocking twist that almost brought America to its knees is that his superhero secret identity is female.

After vote allowing gay kids to become Boy Scouts, some families call it quits
Will this father’s attempt to pass on his homophobia to his son work?
Good news for equality, fairness, logic, and our future generations… the bigots will be gone. Great news for:
Pascal Tessier, a 16-year-old Boy Scout from Maryland, perhaps has the most to gain from today's historic vote. As an openly gay young person, Tessier's Boy Scout council recently said that unless the Boy Scouts lift their ban, Pascal would not be able to earn his Eagle award. So Pascal's older brother, Lucien Tessier, launched a petition on Change.org urging the Boy Scouts to end the national anti-gay ban so his younger brother can earn his Eagle award, just like Lucien did.
Bad news for the children of the bigots who are being forced to comply with their parents’ ignorance, fear, and hate.
"It was hard to explain to a 9-year-old the complexities of why I was telling him that we had to quit," Miller said. "He told me, ‘Daddy, it should be like church. Everybody should be welcome.’"
Miller said he then told Cody that the point of going to church is to seek forgiveness — not for being all-inclusive.
"I said, ‘These people aren't asking for your forgiveness,’" Miller, 51, told NBC News in a telephone interview. "What they’re doing is saying, ‘this is what I am and you have to accept me like I am. I’m not coming to try to change.’
Next up, BSA, you need to lift the ban entirely. If you lose more families, so be it. Only then will the BSA truly embrace equality and what American values are supposed to be. I feel sorry for the boys being pulled out by their homophobic parents. Maybe someday the boy Cody in this article will know his father was wrong and will break the cycle of anti-LGBTQ attitudes. Maybe Cody will be gay and his dad will have to evolve in order to stay in his son’s life. I sure hope Cody is strong and has loving people and friends around to protect him, if needed, from his father.

gaywrites: This Memorial Day, remember to honor the lesbian,...

This Memorial Day, remember to honor the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer veterans who served in silence for so long, and those active service members who continue to endure unequal treatment out of loyalty to their country. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Visit OutServe-SLDN for information about supporting LGBT members of the armed forces.
How do I properly tell my mother that I'm suicidal, I think I might have depression and I need to get help? She doesn't accept that I'm bisexual and doesn't take it seriously, so I'm worried she won't take this seriously either, but I need her to because I really can't do this anymore. I'm struggling and I'm hitting rock bottom and I need her support through this, but I don't know how to tell her without her lashing out on me.

Go here now. Call the number. They can help you work through this. You're not alone. Thousands of people are struggling with the same issue, you're just spread out all over the world and can't see each other. Don't do anything else today until you find someone to talk to. Write back and tell me how it goes with these resources. You can help others by letting us all know where the best resources are.
